October 18, 2013 , Scott Fisher, Calgary Sun

This is the most lopsided Battle of Alberta in the history of the CFL.

The Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos have never met when separated by nine games in the standings.

That will be the case Friday when the Stamps (12-3) visist the Esks (3-12) at Commonwealth Stadium (7 p.m., TSN/News Talk 770).

But Eskimos receiver Nate Coehoorn, a Calgary Dinos grad, said the records go out the window when the longtime rivals meet on the gridiron.

“It definitely has the feel of the Battle of Alberta,” Coehoorn said. “I’ve been thinking about it all week.

RichText.

“It just feels like a different game, a more intense game. Any time the Stamps come up, it’s going to be a good battle.

“We know we can play with them despite our record.”

Esks quarterback Mike Reilly said if his team’s not going to the post-season — and it’s not — then he would love to ruin other teams’ post-season plans.

“We’ve got three games against West opponents,” Reilly said of his squad’s remaining schedule. “And all three are big games for them.

“We’re not going to be in the post-season, but we’d like to make their lives as miserable as we can for the next three weeks.

“We’d like to make (the Stamps’) road a little tougher. If we can get a win (Friday), it’s going to make things a little bit more difficult for them.”

Sometimes — not always, but sometimes — an eliminated team can be dangerous when pride and future employment is on the line.

Eskimos linebacker Rennie Curran hopes Friday night is an example of pride winning out over a superior record.

“I don’t care what the records are,” linebacker Curran said. “We’re going to go out and play like it’s the first game of the season.

“Our main objective is to go out on our home field and show our fans we still take pride in wearing that green and gold.”

Lemon drops in

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen a Lemon Drop.

Since Week 4, to be exact.

It’s been a long wait for Shawn Lemon, but the Stamps defensive end will finally get an opportunity to terrorize another CFL quarterback Friday night.

“It’s been 10 or 11 weeks,” Lemon said of his last appearance in Winnipeg in Week 5.

“So I’m very excited to play and be back out there with the guys.”

Lemon’s struggle to get on the field hasn’t been a result of lack of effort or commitment.

But the other two defensive ends ahead of him on the depth chart — Charleston Hughes and Cordarro Law — have combined for 25 sacks and sit No. 2 and No. 3 in the league, respectively.

Lemon’s appearance, which was confirmed by Stamps GM/head coach John Hufnagel Thursday, means Law will almost certainly sit out with an undisclosed ailment.
