Edmonton- For an established player in the Canadian Football League, the first pre-season game of the year is often an afterthought. Get in your time, get in a few good plays, stay healthy and call it a day. That’s if he even has to suit up at all.
Edmonton Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed will likely either sit or severely limit the playing time of his established players for Friday night’s pre-season tilt with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
“Guys like Fred Stamps are not going to play,” Reed said on Wednesday after his team wrapped up its practice at Commonwealth Stadium’s Field House.
Solidified spots, like those belonging to Stamps and his fellow slotback Cary Koch, don’t need evaluating. On the defensive side of the ball, it doesn’t get more solid than J.C. Sherritt, who set a league record for tackles in a season in 2012 with 130.
“Pretty much those positions we feel that we’re set in they won’t play a lot. They’ll get a quarter and then we’ll move forward,” Reed said.
Friday night will mean a lot to Rennie Curran. The 24-year-old auditioning linebacker is a chip off of the Sherritt block, at an undersized five-foot-11 and 230 pounds. With Sherritt’s minutes likely on the minimal side, the man beneath him on the Eskimos’ depth chart realizes that Friday’s likely rainy night is a big opportunity for him.
“I know there are a lot of questions with me coming from the NFL and seeing what my abilities are,” the former Tennessee Titan and Tampa Bay Buccaneer said. “I plan on making a statement when I go out there and to just fly around and be a leader on defence and just really make my presence felt.”
